Time to celebrate

May 11, 2007

We’re getting stoked about the change of pace and experiences awaiting us in the next several weeks. Contact may be minimal during that time.

I’ve been wanting to post about the city of Chiang Mai. I doesn’t seem like I’ve spent enough time in it to really feel its vibes yet. But preliminarily, it seems to be a relatively clean city. I don’t think I’ve been in the slummiest areas yet. They have flowers/shrubbery planted in the medians on major streets. The roads are in good condition. In terms of niceness, think more in terms of Nairobi or San Salvador than Monrovia. Speed limits don’t really seem to be a big deal, and so they drive fairly fast. They aren’t particularly rude, though. They have a mix of large stores and malls and little hole in the wall establishments. Public transport is fairly readily available on major thoroughfares. Scooters (mopeds) abound. Traffic can be heavy, but I don’t remember seeing any serious jams. They drive on the left side of the road, so that’s a little weird. I’ve driven several times, and the Him’s protecting hand has been with me. We have a convenience store within about a five minute walk, and a major supermarket maybe ten minutes drive.

For those of you who are curious about where I’m headed next week, you can contact my family or girlfriend. Thanks to those of you who are sky talking–we do need it. And it would be cool if everybody would remember us to Him as we go traveling.
